I’m going out to dinner tonight.

But where? Chilis? Ruby Tuesday’s? Applebees? who knows? The choices are… pathetic. And the thing is – I’m in the mood for crap food. It’s a TGI Friday’s kind of night. But – without beer? I don’t think I can do it. Some food only tastes good when the taste buds are mired in alcohol. I could go to one of the Indian restaurants, but I have learned one thing out here. I don’t know anything about Indian food. I don’t know what I’m ordering! Is it an appetizer or is it an entree? Is it bread or is it fruit? I don’t know. The menu was not specific. The last time I went, I think I ordered four entrees. Then, they bring you nibbles before the meal and many sauces. I tried them all with the various sauces, but I got the impression the waiters were giving me weird looks. Like I was doing it wrong. Hey – no one teaches you how to eat unrecognizable things! Or it could have been because I was the only person in the restaurant (I guess even 8pm is early).

Too much pressure on a full stomach. Maybe I’ll just do fish…

You’re more courageous than I am when it comes to Indian food. I eat hardly any Indian food when I go to India because I won’t eat it if I don’t know what it is. I stick to pasta and pizza when I travel alone to India.

ASK! How else will you discover great things like biryani and vindaloo and naan and pakoras and samosas and pickled vegetables???
People who run ethnic restaurants are always happy to share what they know – these restaurants are a point of pride with them. You miss so much of a culture when you are afraid to step out of your culinary comfort zone.
Pizza and pasta you can get anywhere. Good, fresh, local food in a foreign country? I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Two points: I know what samosas and biryani are. Hell they served both every day in the cafeteria! And I ordered the vindaloo and the naan, along with the triple baked lentils (something like that) and other things. Also – it was a Chinese/Indian restaurant. Very common out here and there were few chinese and Indians in sight. Just the two waiters with little english wondering what the heck I was doing there.

OK…I have no idea what any of those things are. If I can’t pronounce it or Mom didn’t cook it when we were kids, I don’t eat it. And as a veteran of eating at Chili’s, Applebee’s, or TGI Fridays from my softball or golf tournament experiences, you absolutely must have two beers minimum before eating. Then you get steak or chicken and everything seems awesome.
