Ah, the joys of technology — it’s interesting that they catch up with you at the airport, like you might be leaving the country over speeding tickets!?!?!?! Laurie always used to pick on my Geo Metro as being a death trap on the road. Compared to a Smart Car, the Metro was a Hummer.

Out here they have removed police from the equation (though you can still see them sleeping by the side of the road). Everything is by computer. Speed under the sensor, photos are taken and charges are logged. But they don’t send you a ticket. You have to go ONLINE and see if you have a ticket. Otherwise, you can get stopped at the airport for unpaid fines.

Not like my ride on I-95 every day…where the police won’t even look at you if you are going less than 70, and tandem trailers pass me going 85-90 every morning. I actually saw one of those little smart cars in the middle lane between two tractor-trailers, and I wouldn’t want to be in one of those if something hit me..it would be all over.

The more you talk about St. Louis, the more I think it is Kuwait’s sister city. And I know there is no speeding in India. I have two type of drivers here: Kuwatis speeding along in SUVs and Hummers and Indian men in old Chevys driving like old ladies.

I had to deal with that when I was in St. Louis for those six months. I got a ticket, I had to go to traffic court, I had to pay the ticket and I had to get a Missouri driver’s license. Everybody everywhere has some kind of driving racket. By the way, you’d have no trouble in India — between the traffic and the size of the cars, you can’t go fast ever. As I think about it, I can’t recall having seen a posted speed limit, but it could be that I just can’t read the language.

You don’t understand. I have to drive like Speed Racer out here! but I get a ticket ($75) for one reason – I’m not a Kuwati.

That is hard to believe — 20km under the speed limit maybe, but not 20 over. Then again, that’s just 12 miles per hour over the limit, which is around the unwritten allowance by most police officers. So, is there a fine associated with this notice, or is it just a warning?
