New music?
June 4, 2007 | Filed Under Music |
There isn’t any. Doesn’t exist.
And I’m not saying - “there’s nothing new under the sun”. “Everything is derivative”. That was true in the 70’s, the 80’s and the 90’s and STILL new music came forward. There is nothing out there now. There is no passion. There are no ideas. There is no spark of excitement. Sure - there are old standby’s still putting out a decent set of tunes. But think about it - every decade had a signature sound. New and exciting artists who are still around today. And the beginning of the new millenium brought us - what? Nothing. All these bands are so tame. So bland. This group trying to be glam. That group trying to be retro rock. Singer-songwriters who just bore me to death. I go to the Warped Tour every year. I can’t tell these bands apart! (Except for Billy Talent who is the best rock band you will never hear.) If Bad Religion weren’t playing, I probably wouldn’t go this year. But they are an 80’s band! I would give anything if someone could show me what the sound of the first decade of the 21st Century is.
If something doesn’t come out and tweak my nipples soon….

It is almost back to what Lars Fredrickson of Rancid said back in the Late ’80’s,”Punk’s not dead, it just really sucks right now!” Would someone put out a good record? When bands start copying Incubus (re: new Linkin Park single) it is time to fall on your sword and go out with dignity. It has gotten so bad that I am returning to my Late 70’s roots. My latest CD purchase….”Best of the Buzzcocks”!! We need help!!!
I fear finding myself a year from now saying “You know, Abba wasn’t half bad…”
And you give me grief about listening to Springsteen and the Clash and the Stones? I said last year there was nothing new or great or passionate in rock and roll - and I work at Sirius - I hear it all. I mean honestly, the best album of the last 12 months has been from the New York Dolls, fer crissakes.
Rock and roll is dead. For now.
I don’t think we’ll hear a sound, a genre that defines a decade again.
For good or bad, the whole way we listen to music has changed.
Traditional radio (and dare I say College radio) has pretty much died. People buy songs now not whole albums. They listen to their iPods and only listen to exactly what they want to hear.
On the good side, there’s internet radio. It takes a little more effort but new music is out there. pandora.com will serve up a stream of music that you could never imagine. Is it going to be the “sound of the decade”? Probably not. Are you going to hear something you’ve never heard before? Definitely.
Of course that’s if they don’t bankrupt all the internet radio stations with royalty fees.
First - don’t even mention Springsteen. If they put his face on a bag of pork rinds, you would be buying cases.
Second - I would never give anyone grief about the Clash or old Stones. The difference is that I (and others) actually LOOK for new music. We don’t want to sit around waiting for the next U2 record or playing classic rock ad infinitum. I’m glad the Dolls and Iggy are still around and performing. The sounds are good - just not inspiring. At this rate, the first decade of the 21st Century will be remembered for Norah Jones.
Two words: Amy Winehouse. She has managed to channel Billie Holliday, Shirley Bassey and Dusty Springfield into a package that looks like 1964 Cher on the set of Ironweed. This is, as we say in Marthaworld, a Good Thing.
