So far it is fantastic and very entertaining! A beautiful production to =

Gorky

March 30, 2007 | Filed Under Main | No Comments

Ah, yes - the title.

Gorky Rises is one of my favorite children’s books - one I used to read to my son all the time. The author and illustrator is William Steig, who is well known as both an author of children’s books and as an illustrator for New York magazine for many years. Most people probably know him as the creator of Shrek. Well, we never read that one but I can highly recommend Gorky, Sylvestor and the Magic Pebble, Roland - The Minstral Pig and Dominic. These books are simple (but not stupid) and full of imagination, yet grounded in their own reality. AND just long enough to be a satisfying bedtime read (except for Dominic which is more long form. Gorky, by the way, is a frog.

Vacation Day

March 29, 2007 | Filed Under Main | No Comments

I took a vacaton day today. But - like most of America - taking a vacation day doesn’t mean I was vacationing. Since everyone seems to work five days a week (and be sure to add the hours of commuting), it becomes difficult to accomplish all those other needs in our lives during the only two days off a week we have. For instance, I am only able to pick up my drycleaning on Saturdays before 3PM. That is the only time our hours intersect. So vacation days are used for waiting for the plumber, meeting with contractors, going to parent-teacher conferences, renewing a license, getting your car repaired, taking care of a parent or relative, etc, etc, etc. You know - life. During the time I was an elected official, I took days off for meetings with the DOT, local landowners, and other semi-sorta-offical agencies. But now - life. I guess I didn’t have to worry about this so much when my wife was home. However, we now both work full time and commute and have that wee window of time to accomplish all that needs to be done.

One Obsession

March 28, 2007 | Filed Under Music | No Comments

Music. Music is my obsession. I have lots of it and I get new CDs every week. I listen to everything. Therefore, to me - the iPod was a gift from the gods. Actually, I was a bit of a snob about the iPod in the beginning. I snubbed the digital and bought a new turntable for my vinyl. I waxed rhapsodic about the virtues of the gatefold LP. Even a CD had reading material to add to the musical experience.

Ho ho. How can that compare to having a large chunk of your library at your fingertips?? Thanks to the gift of an 80 gig model from my wife and son, I now have 5,600 songs on the iPod. I will reach 6,000 by summer. Not so hard. That is only 40 more albums (give or take). I have that available to me… though it would be much better if some decent NEW music came out but I won’t hold my breath.

So - a regular post will be what I have added to my collection. I will start with last night’s downloads. Enjoy!

Bill Nelson - Quit Dreaming & Get on the Beam

The Shirts - 1st album plus live cut from CBGBs

Steely Dan - Royal Scam

Sneaker Pimps - Becoming Remixed

The Band - Rock of Ages

Politics suck

March 28, 2007 | Filed Under Politics | No Comments

This is NOT a political blog. Though it will be discussed from time to time as part of the world around us, it will not be an obsession. Politics blows big monkey chunks. I can prove it with a pen and paper, show my work, the theorem, the proof, etc. (thanks Bill) I have first hand knowledge as for the past three years I was a local elected official (which means a couple of years involvement before that). I did not run for re-election for fear of being tainted by one party or another for the rest of my life. So - been there, done that, t-shirt… Our system is so incredibly broken it amazes me that anyone can look at these two miserable groups of people and say one is actually better than the other. Remember that old joke: “What do you call 1,000 lawyers at the bottom of the sea? A good start.” Triple that for politicians. And yet all governments can’t function without them.

Ah, but have they tried monkeys??

Introduction

“‘Gorky! Gorky! What’s up?’  ‘I am!’ Gorky yelled back.”

good god… a blog.

Well, I don’t have a Myspace page (and won’t since Fox owns it), so this will have to do.

So - welcome.  My name is CJ and we’re going to talk.  No rules.  No absolutes. No fetishes (yet).  Whatever comes to mind.  I’m also going to post some of my stories & plays here (since I can’t get published anywhere else).  Let’s see where this takes us.

On you mark.  Get set.  Go.
